The Laboratory continues the scientific traditions and research themes of the Committee on Meteorites of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Laboratory of Comparative Planetology and Meteoritics of the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry (GEOKHI), RAS. The Laboratory is headed by Cyrill Aleksandrovich Lorenz, PhD of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences. The current research scope of the Laboratory encompasses the following areas:
· Formation and evolution of matter in the solar nebula; |
· Accretion, differentiation, metamorphism, and exogenic history of cosmic bodies; |
· Geochemistry and petrology of impact processes. |
The main objects of research include meteorites, lunar soil, dispersed extraterrestrial matter in sedimentary sequences, impact craters, and impactites. The Laboratory curates the national collection of lunar samples, the meteorite collection of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Museum of Extraterrestrial Matter of GEOKHI RAS, and the meteorite exhibition at the A. E. Fersman Mineralogical Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Laboratory employs 14 research scientists, including 6 PhDs.
