CARPOVKA Chondritis L5 Discovery May 2007 8-10 km from the village of Karpovka, Volgograd district, Russia The 126th Russian meteorite, Karpovka, was discovered in May 2007 by S.B. Tarasov and P.A. Gordeev, 8-10 km from the village of Karpovka in the Volgograd district . While on a picnic, they noticed an interesting stone lying on the ground surface in a small depression. The individual specimen, weighing 466.5 grams, was covered with a dark brown fusion crust and, in some places, iron hydroxides formed by terrestrial weathering. The meteorite is an ordinary chondrite of group L, petrologic type 5, weathering grade W2, and impact stage S2.
