History: An individual specimen of the Nagornyj meteorite was found by an unknown person in April 1989 while plowing a field near the rural settlement of Nagornyj, Martynovsky District, Rostov Region (47°22' 57" с.ш.; 41°45'02" в.д.), in an area known as "First Farm". That same year, the meteorite was given by the finder to the Yuzhny Village History Museum (Martynovsky District; located approximately 10 km southeast of Nagornyj), where it remained for a long time before ending up in the possession of private individuals.
In early 2007, Yuzhny resident R.G. Isakov sent a small meteorite chip to the Meteoritics Laboratory of the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where its meteoritic nature was confirmed. On March 1, 2007, the head of the Laboratory, Professor M.A. Nazarov, sent a letter to R.G. Isakov, asking for the necessary details about the place, time, and circumstances of the find, and also for the meteorite (or at least part of it) to be donated to the RAS collection, stating a possible reward for the find. There was no response to this letter, and it was only in March 2015 that the meteorite was discovered again: Yuzhny resident NN contacted D.A. Kazakov, vice president of the Russian Society of Meteoritics Amateurs (ROLM) , online and offered to purchase the meteorite from her, sharing all the details she knew about the find. In April 2015, the meteorite was given to D.A. Kazakov.
Physical characteristics: The total mass of the individual Nagornyj meteorite specimen is 2,748 g. The specimen measures approximately 12 x 11 x 10 cm and is rounded, bordered by several curved and flattened surfaces. Regmaglyptoid relief is not developed. Almost the entire surface is covered by a dense fusion crust, with the exception of a small zone of flaking and a fissured area from which samples were chipped for initial analysis. The surface of the individual specimen is weathered and has a rusty-brown color.
Control sample: A control sample of the meteorite is currently being prepared for transfer to the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A small sample for initial analysis was already submitted there by D.A. Kazakov in April 2015.
